logo Phishing for Card Information

Criminals are constantly sending fraudulent E-mail with troubling messages in an attempt to get you to reveal your debit/credit card information.   Recent examples include the following:

A link in the E-mail takes your browser to a web page designed to harvest your debit/credit card information.   The problem mentioned in the E-mail will apparently go away if you enter your card numbers and/or PIN.

The E-mail looks like State Bank sent it.   The web site looks like State Bank’s.  It must be from State Bank, right?

Wrong!

Criminals work hard to make their E-mails believable.  They mimic addresses and use portions of legitimate web pages to "frame" their own counterfeits.

Recognition is the Key:   If you ever receive such an E-mail, please do us a favor and pause to consider the implications.   You are about to reveal the keys to your bank because of . . . an E-mail?

This is called Phishing.   State Bank of Southern Utah (or any bank or legitimate business) will never ask for your debit/credit card numbers via E-mail for any reason.   The cards are worthless to "restore service" or to identify you, but they are very valuable to criminals who want to drain your account or make unauthorized purchases.   Never reveal the numbers except to conduct transactions which you initiate.   You should always consider any request for a Credit/Debit card number via E-mail as a criminal endeavor.

If you receive such E-mail in the future, please forward it to online@sbsu.com (to help us shut down the fake sites) and then delete it.  Do NOT ever follow the instructions to reveal your card information.
